The Charter Township of Shelby Police Department utilizes the latest techniques in education, prevention, detection and enforcement. Its members undergo constant training to provide professional law enforcement services. Through a mutual effort with our citizens, businesses and community groups  Shelby's Police Department keeps the Township a place where people are secure in their homes, businesses and travels.

                            PRELIMINARY BREATH TEST -- P.B.T.
                               SERVICE FEE IMPLEMENTATION

Attention citizens who use the Shelby Township Police Department for P.B.T !!  the Shelby Township Police Department charges a $10 service fee for each P.B.T. administered.

Citizens requiring a P.B.T. must purchase a "voucher" from the Records Bureau and must present the "voucher" at the Police Department Front Desk prior to the P.B.T. being administered.  

"Vouchers"
may be purchased for a fee of $10 per test requested at the Records Bureau Counter during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday ONLY !!!.  

P.B.T. "vouchers" will NOT be available for purchase on weekends and will NOT be available after 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

The Police Department administers P.B.T.  to citizens with
 "vouchers" 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

The Records Bureau is open Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (excluding holidays). 

Accident Reports:  Accident Reports taken after November 30, 2009, may be obtained at the Records Bureau or online at CLEMIS.  Accident Reports taken before December 1, 2009, may be obtained at the Records Bureau.

Report Fee:  The fee for an entire report is $10 at the Records Bureau, or $14 online.

General Police Reports - Requests for Records:  A Request for Records Form must be submitted to the Records Bureau when requesting copies of police reports and other reports.

Stay Safe and Watch Your Speed
With a radar speed awareness trailer, six police motorcycles and patrol cars equipped with radar,  this Bureau reminds drivers to stay within the speed limits, especially in residential areas, where complaints are most frequent. Requests for traffic enforcement can be made by telephone or submitting a Traffic Complaint Form (see link below).

Police Chaplains serve law enforcement personnel and their families. Chaplains are appointed by the Chief of Police to assist Shelby Township Police Officers and the community by providing spiritual guidance, counseling, and comfort in times of crisis.

The Police Chaplain is on call at all times to assist those cases where his counsel and advice might be helpful. Likewise, a Chaplain is available to the officer's family and to all that are associated in any way with the Police Department.  Please contact the Police Chaplain Coordinator should you require assistance.

Important Note:
  Prior to your visit to the Police Department, be certain that you contact the Police Records Bureau at (586) 731-2121 - Ext. 1, to determine and confirm ability to process your application(s).

Services of this nature are generally reserved for Shelby Township residents and business owners only.

Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW)
New Applications - Application/Information Packets are available at the Records Bureau counter Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The application is processed by the Macomb County Clerk's Office.

Fingerprinting
Hours:  Tuesdays - 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays - 9:00 a.m. to Noon

Handgun(s) - Permit to Purchase
Hours:
  Monday through Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Driver's License or State of Michigan ID Card is required.  After issuance of a "Handgun Permit to Purchase" you are allowed ten (10) days from the date of issuance of your permit to purchase a handgun.

Once you purchase your firearm, you have ten (10) days from the date of the purchase to mail or deliver two (2) copies of the purchase permit form to the Shelby Township Police Records Bureau (please print legibly).  You are no longer required to bring the firearm to the Police Department for any inspection.

Alarm Registration

Pursuant to Ordinance of the Charter Township of Shelby, "Upon notification, any person, firm or corporation who owns, leases or occupies a premises in which an alarm system is installed, used or maintained, shall register such alarm system with the Shelby Township Police Department on forms provided by the Police Department; owners are required to inform the Police Department of changes to the information requested on those forms."

False Alarms - Important Note:
  Shelby Township has a False Alarm Ordinance. Be certain that  your alarm system is in good working order to prevent false alarms. Substantial penalties may be imposed on repeated false alarms. 

PUBLIC AUCTION 
The Police Department holds at least one auction per year, generally in the Spring.  The auction includes motor vehicles, bicycles, and a variety of recovered or unclaimed items on which to bid.  If the amount of property warrants a second auction, it will be held in the Fall of the year.

Scheduled auction dates will be posted on the Township website calendar, with specific information several weeks beforehand.

Contact Sergeant Ken Cazabon at (586) 731-2121 - Ext. 423 to make arrangements for Department Tours and to schedule Crime Prevention speakers.

COMMUNITY SHRED DAY
In an attempt to prevent Identity Theft, the Shelby Township Police Department sponsors an Annual Shred Day in the fall of the year.  The 2010 Shred Day has been scheduled for Saturday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on the Township Municipal Grounds.  

Shelby Township residents and local business owners are given this opportunity to have personal items professionally shredded and recycled, FREE of charge.  Business owners are encouraged to bring just ONE box of documents for shredding.
