Shelby Township Library Summer Reading
Shelby Township residents of all ages are challenged to “read, renew, repeat” this
summer.
Check out our events and track your reading and activities to earn prizes and raffle tickets for grand prizes. Register starting June 8 at shelbytwplib.beanstack.org or download the free Beanstack app. Log your summer reading activities through August 10.

Family Storytime (All Ages)

Bring a blanket to sit on and join us on the lawn next to the library patio for stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities for all ages. In case of bad weather, storytime will take place inside the youth Program Room.

Baby Bears Storytime (Under 2 Years)

Protecting Freshwater Ecosystems (Grades K-5)

Through hands-on science activities, learn from the Clinton River Watershed Council about how Michigan’s Great Lakes are connected to safe drinking water. Participants will receive a Michigan Department of Health & Human Services backpack with
a book and safe drinking water activities included. Registration begins June 7.

Bright Star Theatre: “Upcycled Cinderella” (Grades PreK-4)

When the scheduled performers fail to arrive for the day’s performance, the janitors, Dustmop and Binny, decide to take over in this hilarious version of the classic fairy tale, “Cinderella.” “Upcycled Cinderella” shows that, with a little creativity and ingenuity, you can make the most of any situation.

Share your original artwork with the community! All mediums are welcome. We’ll host the artwork on the library’s website in a special gallery, and the top three favorites will receive a prize. Visit shelbytwp.org/library for the submission form and more information.
Teen Camp NaNoWriMo (Grades 5-12)

Camp NaNoWriMo is your next great writing adventure! Set your own writing goal and officially tackle any kind of writing project. At each meeting we’ll discuss different elements to make your writing stronger including: creating believable characters, constructing plotlines and worldbuilding. Share your progress, brainstorm writing hurdles, and celebrate accomplishments with other teen writers like you. Bring your notebook or laptop/tablet with your writing.

Through hands-on experiments and STEM challenges, participants will test ideas and discover the actions and reactions of physical science using confetti cannons, soda bottles, nail polish remover and more. Registration begins on June 19.

Participants will sculpt their very own ocean themed sea creature out of polymer clay at this workshop hosted by Alex Thomas and Friends. Registration begins on June 26.

Make keychains and wearable art of your own design using plastic and sharpies. You’ll get to see your design shrink down to 2/3 its size in the oven. Registration begins on July 11.

Make the greatest mixed-media creation ever by upcycling odds and ends, canvas,

Teen Styrofoam Block Printing (Grades 5-12)

Learn how to make prints using upcycled styrofoam, a paint roller and acrylic paint to make greeting cards, note cards and art for framing. Participants will make a paper print and a canvas bag as time allows. Dress for a mess.

Tween Science: Discover DNA (Ages 8-12)

Teen Virtual Art Gallery and Art Contest (Grades 5-12)
Let your imagination and creativity loose and share your original art with our community. Submit your original artwork through July 27, 2024. We’ll add the artwork to an online gallery on the library’s website with an online voting system. The three submissions with the most votes will receive a $25 Visa gift card. Winners will be contacted by phone.

Sustainable Gardening

Are you trying to be more intentional in your gardening habits? What can you do in your garden to have an impact on the world around you? Does one drop in the bucket really matter – indeed it does. Together our drops will fill that bucket. Join us as we explore topics such as composting, water conservation, mulching, native plants, seed harvesting, reducing pesticides, integrated pest management and invasive species with Master Gardner Jean Perseley.

Sensory Friendly Movies at the Library

The Legacy Room will be showcasing popular films with the lights on, volume at a reduced level and subtitles on the large cinema screen. All are welcome to enjoy the film in the way they like: standing up, sitting down or walking around. Viewers may leave the film and return as often as they wish. We do ask that any snacks be enjoyed in the cafeteria in consideration of our other viewers. Please use proper consideration when choosing a movie based on its rating. Some films may contain action or bright lights despite being in a lit room.

Protecting Six Presidents, the life of a Secret Service Agent

Radford Jones retired from the U.S. Secret Service as a Special Agent in Charge of the Michigan Division and, during his career, had assignments in field operations and presidential protection. He was involved in security planning for political conventions, presidential inaugurations and security advance activities worldwide including the protection of six Presidents and a number of visiting foreign heads of state.

Presenter Qing Tiffany will explain how each of us can make a big impact on the problem by changing how we interact with food at home, when we shop and when we eat at restaurants.

Legend of Sleeping Bear Film and Painting Exhibition

Johanna Oswald, a Petoskey native, created the short film “Legend of Sleeping Bear,” which premiered at the LA Skins Fest in Hollywood, CA, and is showing at dozens of Film Festivals in both Europe and North America. It is an endearing tribute to Northern Michigan, its history and folklore, and was created in collaboration with the LTBB’s Language Department, as well as other North American artists. To enhance the film’s story, artist Martina Hahn will share a speed painting session along with the film.

Exploring Forensic Science

Have you wondered how forensic scientists gather and study evidence to solve crimes? Are you curious to find out if it’s just like you see on the crime shows on tv? Morgan Rae Bayer, forensic technician with the Michigan State Police, will explain her profession, share stories and tell you what’s different from tv (and what is the same!)
