2020

Unfortunately, the 2020 Arbor Day Celebration was cancelled due to COVID-19. The township encouraged residents to find alternative ways to celebrate Arbor Day

2019

Shelby Township hosted a tree photo contest to celebrate Arbor Day. The township asked participants to submit photos of trees throughout Shelby Township that meant something to them, whether it be a special place, memory or just a favorite tree.

The first-place winner was recognized at the township's third annual Arbor Day Celebration and received a free pavilion rental for a township park.

Along with the photo contest, the township had an Arbor Day Celebration that featured a re-dedication of the official Shelby Township tree in Curtis Cemetery and the planting of an oak sapling at Fire Station No. 3.

2018

In 2018, the township hosted the second annual Arbor Day Celebration at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center.

Parks and Recreation Director Joe Youngblood announced that the township had renewed its status as an official Tree City USA Community. For many years, Shelby Township had been enacting and engaging in the policies and procedures that defined a Tree City, but had not applied for the program.

Then, the township unveiled our new program, Preserving a Better Place.

The township's new Preserving a Better Place campaign was designed to raise awareness of the natural and cultural resources in the community and promote policies for responsible stewardship to protect assets like our township's tree canopy, which is the second-largest among all Macomb County communities.

The township also took place in a new tree dedication, along with Gerry Santoro from Macomb County Planning and Economic Development and Green Macomb and Clinton River Watershed Council Executive Director Anne Brasie. Afterwards, participants were invited into the Nature Center to explore the new exhibits.

2017

On April 28, 2017, Shelby Township planted a ceremonial burgundy maple tree in Mae Stecker Park as what would become the first annual Arbor Day Celebration in conjunction with the county's Arbor Day event.

Earlier in the same day, the county held an Arbor Day event at Freedom Hill. County Executive Mark Hackel and local elementary school students planted a cherry tree, and the county offered a tree sale to the public.

On May 13, 2017, Shelby Township continued to plant 55 trees in Chief Gene Shepherd Park with the help of Green Macomb.
