Volunteer with Shelby Township:

A better place to live, learn, play and do business

Dear Hopeful Volunteer,

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at our beloved library or in our Parks and Recreation department. Your enthusiasm and willingness to contribute your time and talents mean the world to us and the community you are making a difference in.

The Shelby Township library is more than just a place to borrow books. It’s a dynamic and vibrant hub of our community, brimming with engaging programs, diverse services, and extensive collections designed to enrich the lives of every individual in our neighborhood. Whether you’re here to discover new stories, join a community event, or find a quiet corner for reflection, there’s always a place for you at our library.

The library offers meaningful volunteer opportunities for both teens and adults, and we are delighted to have you explore these possibilities with us. As an adult volunteer, you will have the chance to assist with the operation of our Friend’s bookstore, where your efforts will help sustain our library’s many wonderful initiatives. If you’re a teen, you’ll be supporting our children’s and teen programs, helping to foster a love of reading and learning among the younger members of our community.

To get started as a volunteer at the library, please visit us online at shelbytwp.org/library. There, you will find a wealth of information about our programs and services. Teen volunteers can find an application for volunteer service. Adults can find a membership application for the Friends of the Library (only current members can volunteer with the Friends) and will be contacted by the Friends to continue the volunteer application process.

Our Shelby Township Activities Center and Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center are two premier community resources, offering a diverse range of opportunities for volunteers to support community activities, sporting events, educational classes and seminars, and nature-based experiences that are attended by residents of all ages. Becoming a volunteer at the Activities Center or Nature Center provides numerous opportunities for engagement and enrichment for everyone and allows for interaction with all different age groups.

If volunteering on a weekday morning or afternoon at our Activities Center you will be assisting with our senior population, ages 50 and up by helping prepare for, or at an event, program, meals on wheels, or sorting and pricing merchandise for our senior gift shop. At our Nature Center we need assistance in the office helping our staff with clerical activities and program preparation, animal care volunteers that assist with the daily tasks to keep our animals happy and healthy. Those volunteers with a green thumb or love of the outdoors may assist in the teaching gardens. There are also plenty of opportunities to assist with our special events that draw in a large gathering of the community. Often the success of these events can be greatly attributed to our volunteers who help keep it running smoothly, providing a positivity family fun experience.

Thank you again for your interest in volunteering with us. We look forward to working together and making a positive impact in our community.

Warmest regards,
